Autophagy is the Body’s Way of Avoiding Illnesses and Staying Young

The word autophagy is from the Greek word autóphagos meaning self-eating. In medicine, is a physiological process that occurs naturally in the body involving cells’ self-destructing mechanism. It also plays a role as anti-aging mechanism1 and its role in human diseases2.

In one article at Cell3 showed that increasing autophagy may contribute to longevity. The key element at achieving this through caloric restriction such as intermittent fasting.

The discovery of this mechanism led many health experts to find solutions involving slowing down of the aging process and prevention of many diseases. Autophagy is discovered by Yoshinori Ohsumi who won the Nobel Prize recently.

Autophagy In Health and Disease

Here’s a quick overview of autophagy’s role in human health and disease.

Exercise Can Boost Autophagy

As mentioned earlier, intermittent fasting can help maintain autophagy in the body. Another way to boosting it is through exercise. A study published in Nature4 found that when researchers let a mouse running on a treadmill for 30 minutes, it causes a rapid increase of autophagy in the muscle cells.

The researchers also found that exercise is a much faster way of inducing autophagy than caloric restriction. Exercising for 30 minutes induced a 40% to 50% increase in autophagy. Increasing exercise time from 30 minutes to 40 minutes induced a 100% increased in autophagy.

Terry Crews On Intermittent Fasting and Autophagy

Terry Crews, an American actor, and former football player shares his experience with intermittent fasting.

His first meal of the day is at 2 PM and his last meal at 10 PM. Terry Crews has been doing intermittent fasting for 5 years. He swears the benefits of intermittent fasting

He also talks about autophagy.
