Porn Switches Off A Portion of Women’s Brain

Most of the time, porn addiction is linked to men. However, women are also likely to become a porn addict, too particularly young women. The bad news, while purn seems a turn on, it does something bad particularly to women’s brain.

Additionally, men who are porn addict are likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. And, this is backed by science. Unfortunately, women are no exception when it comes to negative impact of porn, and it is on their brain.

Women’s Brain on Porn

Researchers from the Netherlands say that porn causes a portion of women’s brain to turn off. In their study1, they took 12 heterosexual women. These women are pre-menopausal and having a birth control. So, these are not young women but women who are already into having sexual intercourse.

The researchers let the women watch a female-friendly pornography. On the other hand, the researchers also let the women watch non-sexual clips of Carribean’s marine life.

Then, using a positron emission tomography (PET) scan, the researchers measure the women’s blood flow to their brain. What caught the researchers attention is the brain’s primary visual cortex is receiving less blood flow.

The primary visual cortex of the brain is a part of the brain responsible for processing images. This reduced blood flow on women’s visual cortex occurs while watching explicit porn.

If there a reduction in blood flow in that portion of the brain, it means it is less active. On the other hand, when the women switch to watching videos of Carribean marine life, there is an increase in blood flow in the visual cortex.

Why This Happens?

It may seem a mystery but the researchers hypothesize that during arousal, women’s brain may reduce blood flow to the visual cortex. However, this does not mean the brain is not doing other things at all.

Porn on Visual Cortex

It simply means the brain is directing the blood flow to other parts of the body. And, in this scenario, the brain directs more blood flow to the parts of the body responsible for sexual arousal.

This may seem the brain is making a decision to focus more on body parts where sexual arousal happens rather than absorbing what is on the screen. In other words, it means watching porn seems to be an effortless act for women.

The strong de‐activation during watching high‐intensity erotic film might represent compensation for the increased blood supply in the brain regions involved in sexual arousal, also because high‐intensity erotic movies do not require precise scanning of the visual field, because the impact is clear to the observer.

Good or Bad?

Porn can be a good thing especially for couples seeking new techniques for intimacy. However, it can be a bad thing when it becomes an addiction.

This is where sex education become valuable especially for young women. Of course, it should start at home. Parents should take responsibility to try and educate their children about sex.

It is not meant to demonstrate children how to do sex but certain acts where children can model. For instance, parents getting used to being naked without giving them a reason may lead a young girl to get curious on her own.

Take for example this young girl’s reason she becomes a porn addict. Hence, as parents, we should be teaching children their sexuality.

Of course, for grown-up women who have difficulty breaking free of porn addiction, always seek help.
