40-Years Worth of Data
This study lasted for nearly half a decade. During the 40-year period follow up, the researchers found people with higher fitness levels have 16% lower risk of developing depression.
These are the people who exercise more and intensely. As they grow older, they have a lower risk of depression. Moreover, participants in the higher fitness group have 61% lower risk of death due to heart disease.
And, those who were diagnosed with depression during the course of the study have 56% lower risk of developing heart problems. All the people in the higher fitness group have all these benefits than those with lower fitness levels.
Clearly, regular exercise plays a significant role not only during the present age but at later years, as well. In fact, studies show that seniors who are exercising regularly have better motor skills.
In another study, regular exercise shows it can help boosts memory function. However, don't wait until you reach middle age to start exercising. The earlier you start, the better. Maintaining physical activity is good for the brain.
As a matter of fact, in just 10 days of without exercise, the brain experiences a reduced blood flow.
